With almost two decades in the hairdressing (no, hair designing) biz, David Moore is our go-to guy for all things hair related. He’s seen it all, and now, dear readers, you can benefit from his experience. This column is all about getting you there without blood, sweat or tears…

Consider this: With each seasonal change comes a new direction in fashion. These changes are usually initiated by the fashion houses of Europe and don’t always suit everyone. So how do you find yourself a new ‘do’?

Think of it in terms of marketing yourself. Whether it be for work, socialising or relaxing, ask yourself this: How do I want be perceived when it comes to the way I look?

What to Do

You can start exploring this question by doing a little research...

1. I want to be just like you…
Girls: Check out the first 4 pages of your trashy mags like NW and WHO. If it’s good enough for Hollywood, it’s good enough for you.
Guys: Flick through the pages of Men’s Style, GQ and Alpha (the sports mag) Note: our sporting stars are styled by some of Australia’s finest,
2. Use the best bits…
Pick out elements of looks you like. Unless your hairdresser is handy with a hammer and chisel, achievable and realistic goals are advisable.

3. Take it slow…

Rather than giving your boyfriend/girlfriend a premature stroke, try adapting some of these style ‘adjustments’ over a period of time. The last thing you want is to hyperventilate yourself into 2009.

4. Work together…

Confide in your hairdresser and work together. If your hairdresser has trouble focusing on….err… let’s say….YOU, why don’t you ask your friends, or better still, when you spot someone with a hairstyle you love, ask them who cuts it for them. Referrals are always the best way to go.

What NOT to do

Unless you are a seasoned pro and are constantly complimented on your “amazing sense of style,” you are going to need help.

I don’t mean taking out a loan, ripping a page out of Vogue, buying everything the model is wearing and strutting down the aisles of your local supermarket.
And just because it suits Amy Winehouse or David Arquette doesn’t mean you can pull it off.

This column is all about getting you there without blood, sweat or tears. Every week I’ll inform and delight on all issues relating to hair.

Next Week: Sexy v’s Edgy! Can you do both?

‘Til then,

David
