Steve Aoki's debut mix release, Pillowface & His Airplane Chronicles, has officially landed. With his trademark treatment of indie hipster tracks by the likes of Justice, the Klaxons, The Mystery Jets, Peaches, and Datarock, this is one release that is a must in any self-respecter’s collection.

Based in LA, Aoki (aka Kid Millionaire) is the unofficial leader of the can’t-stop crew; the cool kid who seems custom-made for ksubi, hangs with TheCobraSnake, and is responsible for tunes that are well-ahead of any trend.

Savvy caught up with Aoki on the eve of the album’s release, and he was kind enough to answer a few q’s with a few a’s…


Savvy: For someone who's not familiar with your work (may the Good Lord take pity on their soul), describe your sound.
Aoki: Barbarian fighting noises. Or Wagner.

Savvy: Ok… Just say this album was the score to an imaginary film. What would the film be about?
Aoki: Barbarians fighting for two hours straight.

Savvy: And who would play the lead role?
Aoki: Arnold Schwarzenegger or Sly.

Savvy: What kind of job did music save you from?
Aoki: PhD in sitting under a light reading foucault.

Savvy: What's the most embarrassing CD in your collection – you know, the one you only keep because you paid good money for it at age 12?
Aoki: I love all my cds… including Steve Vai.

Savvy: Why 'Pillowface & His Airplane Chronicles'?
Aoki: Pillowface is a character I created for my alter ego when he's travelling. He functions with no sleep, and after some time his face just turned into a pillow.

Savvy: What does the not-so-distant future hold for you?
Aoki: Hopefully sleeping in my bed for eight hours with no interruption so I can finally reach alpha stage of sleep. You need that or you'll eventually be sent to a nut house.
