Daize Shayne's advice for aspiring musicians is contained in the title of her debut CD, Live Your Dreams (BCR-BCS Records). She certainly has.
How awesome is Daize?
She's a triple-threat: flourishing recording artist, world-renowned champion surfer and successful model/actress. Savvy readers will recognize former Savvy Girl Holly Weber playing a stripper in the sexy music video for Daize's "Naughty Girl". The song was featured on SavvyTV in the video for "Is She Hot?" contest winner Ashlee James.
As illustrated by her photos in Maxim magazine, Daize is sexy enough to be the "hot" girl in videos herself. As a model, she has posed alongside Britney Spears and been featured in numerous magazines.
But Daize isn't just about style - she's substance.
Her music has been compared to a blend of Alanis Morisette and Fiona Apple, with a hint of Sarah McLachlan. Her songs have a radio-friendly appeal without losing a harder edge and classic rock energy.
It was only after reaching the pinnacle of success as a surfer that she began to focus on her music career. She's already headlined a Hard Rock Cafe tour, hit the road with Sammy Hagar, filled in for Eddie Van Halen, and performed for the leader of the free world at Madison Square Garden.
She took time out of her busy schedule to tell Savvy about her act...
Savvy: Daize, love the riffs, girl!
Daize: Thanks.
Savvy: You're, like, the ultimate California dream girl: fit, fun and talented.
Daize: Thanks for saying that.
Savvy: You spell your name in an unusual way. What's up with that?
Daize: When I was 14, I used to dabble in hallucinogenics. One night, I was tired of being called my given name and decided to go with D-A-I-Z-E. The next day, when I came down, I decided I really liked it and told everyone I changed my name. My last name, Shayne, is the same story but lived out in 1968 by my father. His last name wasn't cool enough for him, so he changed it from "Summa" to "Shayne". That's how "Daize Shayne" came about.
Savvy: "Daisy Summa". Hmm. Still has a ring to it. Tell us about your CD, "Live Your Dreams". Besides the fact that you're hot, why should we listen to it?
Daize: It doesn't taste like a to-go box of left-over tuna sandwich! (Laughs) It is not soggy and whiny. It's in-your-face and real, not canned and overproduced. It's naughty, it's nice. It's what rock music should be like... Arena rock!
Savvy: You're not only talented but gorgeous. That can't hurt your career.
Daize: Put it this way... Looking good in a bikini is not only a plus on the beach. Since I got it, I'm learning to flaunt it.
Savvy: Flaunt away! (Laughs) You're also a professional surfer.
Daize: Winning two world titles in surfing was pretty amazing.
Savvy: Any interesting stories about surfing that you haven't told a hundred other magazines yet?
Daize: (Laughs) Yesterday, I went surfing in Hawaii while I was home from the road before getting on the airplane back to L.A. A bunch of cops had closed the beach and were directing traffic to another area. I knew it was probably sharks. That's usually what happens. It doesn't bother me. I can always sneak around the cops and go surfing anyway. Come to find out, though, the night before someone had jumped off the nearby cliff and the blood had attracted some of the BIG boys from the deep sea. I guess there were still body parts in the water floating and sharks were all over the place.
Savvy: Uh-oh.
Daize: (Laughs) Yeah, I decided to sit that session out.
Savvy: Any other talents you're exploring?
Daize: If I wasn't a rocker or a pro-surfer, I would be a bad-ass dancer. Stripping has always been a fantasy of mine. My man doesn't seem to mind me living it out with him. (Laughs) I act my way out of all kinds of things so I don't know if I need to be on Broadway. Just yesterday I talked myself out of an 80-in-a-55-mph-zone speeding ticket. I told the officer I was late for my pole-dancing class. (Laughs)
Savvy: (Laughs) Good one. How important is your look to marketing yourself as a performer?
Daize: I find great pleasure in dressing up and always have.
Savvy: How much of your look is your own and how much of it is a stylist?
Daize: I love to dress according to the way I feel that day. My clothing sponsor, Hurley, makes very cute clothes for all occasions. It it's hot and sunny, I'll wear a bathing suit under a feminine dress in case I find an ocean to play in. If the rain comes and I'm in Hawaii, I'll only wear my bathing suit and matching galoshes so I can splash around in the puddles like a little kid. If I'm rocking live on stage, I can't overdo it.
Savvy: Describe...
Daize: Fishnets, leather knee-high boots and black eye-liner. However, if the temperature drops, I'll wear my checker Vans with tight jeans, a sexy sweater and a stylish hat. My Jeevice sunglasses are a necessity too. I just love fashion!
Savvy: We know entertaining is harder work than it looks like, but it's still a really cool lifestyle. Besides the cool clothes and sponsorships, what's been a highlight for you?
Daize: Playing for the president. Also, rocking out Madison Square Garden awhile back; that was unbelievable. This has always been about the journey and not the destination.
Savvy: No regrets?
Daize: Regrets are great lessons in life. Disappointments only make you stronger.
Savvy: What are your goals for this year and beyond?
Daize: I hope to take over the world with my unforgettable charm, try new things, drink more good wine, get good at pole dancing, keep laughing, win a Texas Hold'Em tournament, spear a 100-pound Ahi, and stay true to the little girl singing in front of the mirror with that hairbrush while taking my music to the world for all to enjoy.
Savvy: Who are your inspirations?
Daize: John Wooden, Mozart, Jesus, Mom and Dad, Bono, Bill Gates, Ken Tamplin, Oprah, Kelly Slater, and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Savvy: What do you tell all of the budding musicians out there?
Daize: Follow your heart and live out every dream!
Savvy: Whose music do you listen to?
Daize: I grew up listening to everything from Bob Marley to Metallica. Dire Straits to James Brown. Ella Fitzgerald to Van Halen. Led Zeppelin to Al Green.
Savvy: Where do your ideas for songs come from?
Daize: Without Ken Tamplin, my music wouldn't come alive the way it does now. He somehow pulls things out of me that I didn't even know or want to admit were in me. We'll start writing and I'll have a huge smile from ear to ear. By the time we're finished, I'm a half-lunatic with cuts on my hands from punching the walls. I've also come in there half-depressed and left doing cartwheels.
Savvy: Sounds like he's had quite an effect on you.
Daize: Let's just say he has become my shrink.
Savvy: Are you as hard-rocking live as your image and music suggests?
Daize: Last show I did, I jumped off a big ass speaker onto the stage and pretty much face-planted. Heels over my head! (Laughs) But somehow I managed to make it look planned. The crowd loved it. They must have gotten a quick crotch-shot on the way down. (Laughs) I ended up getting a few stitches and a new scar. I love scars.
